“…we see there is probably going to be a lot of volatility. There is a reasonable case that says the lack of investment over the last 5 years, 6 years might lead to higher prices coming over the next couple.”

They are not worried about inflation

“…when I look across our whole portfolio today and I compare 80% of our capital is going internationally into areas that are deflating. So, I don’t worry in our portfolio about the inflationary pressures but I am certainly worried about the activity that we are doing in certain basins and in certain categories of spend.”

But they will evaluate the impact of persistent inflation

“…we will look at our plans later this year. But if we see persistent inflation that starts to erode the margins, we will allocate capital, the lowest cost to supply highest margin opportunities in the portfolio.”

Oil at $50 is not going away any time soon

“…back about 4 years, 5 years ago I was invited to the Vienna meeting. I was on the stage like this in front of all the big OPEC crowd with at the time, Ali Naimi, who is the Minister of Saudi Arabia, the Venezuelan oil minister, the Iranian and I got up and I told them that U.S. would surpass Saudi Arabia in production in 5 years. And I got laughed off the stage. And 3 years later, Naimi invited me back. He said, I will be damned, you are right. And we need to understand this a little bit more. And the message to him at the time was this isn’t going away in 3, 4, 5 years. So to put it in perspective, our industry has found over 400 billion barrels of resource in the last 10 years, 400 billion. That’s 10 crude oil days in the last 10 years in this business. And so I think the recognition that’s now coming is one that it’s real, that it is competitive at a $50 barrel price deck and it ain’t going away.”

“And then in a world of extremely low interest rates, we have changed I always joke, if you fly to California and you go talk to Google or you go talk to Apple and say I have got capital for you to commit to technology and new ideas. They will say no thanks, we got more cash than we know what to do with. If you stop instead halfway in West Texas and ask people, hey, do you have anything you can use with all this capital, they will say yes, I can stick it in the ground.”

Efficiency drives improved energy production

“Our first quarter production out of this piece of our business was up 2% or 3% over what we were predicting, say, a quarter ago. And it’s the continuing drumbeat of improvements from technology and other efficiency drivers, things like data analytics that are helping us continue to get more and more efficient in the results that we get there….. If I had to call out one thing that’s really gained steam over the last couple of years and it’s paying significant dividends for us now, it would be just generically data analytics, big data where we’ve been working hard on that for quite a few years, but we’ve been able to standardize and drive it through more and more of our operations and have it much more handily helping us make day-to-day decisions on how to develop as a stronger force. ”

There is deflation in the non-shale outside the US

“…there’s really been no big changes in my views about inflation for this year versus the comments I made on the last quarter call. If I look at our spending year-to-date where we track this every month, we are still net deflation year-to-date as a company. So we’ve certainly experienced more deflation in our costs after the first quarter in 2017 versus 2016 and there is a mix there.”

Recovering oil prices help boost the bottom line

“This quarter, Brent averaged about $54 a barrel and Henry Hub averaged about $3.30 an MCF. This resulted in an average overall realized price of about $36 a barrel. We reported an adjusted loss of $19 million or $0.02 a share. Year-over-year, adjusted earnings improved nearly $1.2 billion. The biggest driver was a 58% improvement in realized prices, but we also benefited from the actions we’ve been taking to improve our cost structure…One way to think about this quarter is that with $54 Brent, on an adjusted basis, we were very close to being profitable. ”

Behavioral health business is more recession resistant

“if you’re seeking — and you’re seeking acute care treatment, you need a hip implant or you need some sort of ENT surgery et cetera, you may think about the economics of that; you may choose to postpone that because you don’t want to come out of pocket for a co-pay or deductable or because you don’t want to be out of work frankly during a tough economic climate. But if you try to commit suicide or you overdose on drugs and alcohol, you are not going to be in a position to decide whether you should or shouldn’t be admitted to the hospital. That decision is really being made generally by somebody else who is effectively economically insensitive to what your economics of the situation or concerns might be. So, I think that’s another reason why the behavioral business has generally proved to be more, I’ll call it, recession resistant.”

Optimum occupancy in behavioral care is in the low to mid 70s

“occupancy rates and our behavioral facility peaks in the mid 80s, right around 84% in about 2005-2006. What we started to do at that point because we have a view probably the ideal occupancy rate in this business is somewhere in the low to mid 70s. And so, when we were at 85% in about 10 years ago, we’re turning away a lot of patients at that point because obviously if we’re averaging 85%, it means that there’s a lot of days when we’re at 90 and 95 and even a 100% occupancy. It also means that because of some of the constraints that we have, we have put male and female patients; we don’t put adults and children together, we don’t certain diagnoses together. So, as a consequence, it’s difficult for facilities to really run at something close to full occupancy.”

Low power for IoT requires innovation

“if you look at the energy efficiency that’s required. If you’re handset only has 10% battery life left, and I know that when mind says 10% battery life, I’m like looking for a charger. But if you imagine that amount of power needs to power an IoT device for five years. So that’s essentially the amount of energy that’s in the little coin cell and they want that device to sense the environment. Let’s say every few minutes it needs to communicate that when something happens. This type of energy consumption requires a lot of innovation. And if so this is what we are focused on doing.”

From a macro perspective, wireless markets suffering but infrastructure business doing well

“I think a lot of people that we are selling into wireless were suffering, especially in China, we were not exposed to that at least on our infrastructure business, we had a little bit of exposure on the microcontroller side and some of the optical modules that did hold back our growth in IoT in the second half. But on infrastructure we see that it’s pretty solid globally. And this is more of a reflection of core network in data center roll outs.”

“Next, with respect to our oil and gas exposure, we were not surprised by the level of impaired loan formations this quarter. Ongoing analysis indicates that the oil and gas nonretail credit portfolio continues to perform within expectations, given the current level in near-term outlook for commodity prices in this sector. We are beginning to see signs of deterioration in the oil impacted provinces consumer credit portfolios, which again are well within our earlier expectations. Based on ongoing stress tests conducted against the credit portfolios, I remain comfortable that the potential impact of low energy prices on the bank’s credit losses remains well within the range of a 5% to 10% increase over 2015 levels.”

Seeing a gradual increase in delinquency rates over last 4-5 months in oil impacted provinces

“we have been watching it very closely, especially the impacted provinces, which would be Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland. And what we are seeing in two categories, being the indirect auto but the non-prime segment primarily and then in the card segment, we have seen a gradual increase in delinquency rates over the last four or five months.”

Customers affected are early indicator, the type of customer that would be more challenged than the typical customer

“So in many respects we look at that as an early indicator because that would be the customer that maybe would be more challenged than the typical customer. Now, I would stress that these two categories are less than 1% of our total book and that we expected to see losses of this level.”

We have some key significant resources in some key resource trends around the world today like oil sands, LNG, conventional oil and North American Gas. We’re 80% OECD which we think lowers the execution risk in the portfolio”

We always plan for a range of prices

“At ConocoPhillips we don’t plan on just one particular price path, we run scenarios on those supply and demand factors and we want to be resilient to a broad range of prices and that’s how we’re running the company. But as we think about that going forward what does that mean? We’re planning on lower more volatile prices over the next three years, but we think we have a way to win in that environment and how do you do that? You do that through the portfolio.”

Planning to drop capex and then keep capital spend flat and expect to grow the company still

“So while we’re keeping capital flat at $11.5 billion there are some internal workings that are freeing up more flexibility for the company as we think about the capital program and we’re going risk to the commodity price environment over the next couple of years. But even at this lower capital spend we still are going to grow the company. So you see here our plan is to take the company to 1.7 million BOE per day by 2017 and that’s from the base today of about 1.532 million BOE per day.”

The dividend is a top priority

“So here is what you should listen to for today and I don’t want to sound like broken record but I am just sounding like a broken record. The dividends are top priority use of our cash; we will pay our shareholders first.”

People are still working under the assumption of $75 oil in 2017

” the difficulty about talking about cash flow is that you have to do it relative to a certain price level, and this morning we’re going to talk about cash flow in terms of 2017 price level that is $75 Brent, $70 WTI and $3.50 Henry Hub. And you remember just on Ryan’s presentation few slides back he showed a range of analyst projections out there people who’re making forecast about all the prices and this is kind of midpoint to below midpoint of where those ranges are.”
