Feeling good about inventory position

We’re pretty well balanced as we have been. We were pretty consistent with our overall viewpoint with inventory and have never felt we were on the high side this year, but actually if you dig into our numbers, we’re pretty consistent with where we we’re in ’15, 2015 where we felt we were actually a touch lean as we were building up stock going the new F-150 back at that time.

So, we feel good about our inventory position. We’re running out of months some days to build vehicles for 2017, but we’ll obviously balance supply to demand, but we would certainly be looking into leaning into giving some more production at this point over the next six-month period and now less just based on our current day supply.

Used vehicle pricing stabilizing

“The used vehicle pricing has been very stable over the last I guess call it 8 to 10 weeks now Colin and in fact taking up slightly depending on the segment very, very stable. We did see some positive uplift down in the hurricane-affected areas that was a little greater the national that will equalize over time.”

Expecting 18m vehicles

“Our early read is a total sales including medium and heavy trucks came in at approximately 1.41 million vehicles last month. This will correspond to a total industry SAAR of about 18.3 million vehicles, providing the overall industry with an approximate 5% increase versus a year ago.”

Residual values are something to keep an eye on

“Well Dan a good question. It kind of goes hand in hand with what’s been publicized in terms of overall residual pressure, you know pressure on residual values in the industry. That will go hand in hand with equity, obviously the less that a trade is worth with the customer more risk from an equity position. We’ve seen it, I don’t have it, a third in the industry. The latest number I saw is actually below 30%, but it would have been climbing over the last several years. This is, in terms of customers in a not equity position, it’s actually been climbing for several years, couple percentage points a year. With our strong residual values our lower lease penetration in the industry, we run at a more favorable position to that, but it is obviously something the overall residual values that’s some that we are keeping our eye on, we’ve talked about and that one of the reasons that our guidance was not having the industry going up next year is that’s in-line with a lot of positive factors in the industry that’s one of the drags in the industry that we keep an eye on.”

Anything that leads to economic growth is of course good for us

“I think one point I would make is that before we were to change our expectations or our guidance we have to have a better idea of what the set of policies would be proposed and eventually in active. So, I think that would be the first answer to your question. Generally of course anything that leads to faster economic growth, all of the things equal would be to faster industry volume and faster truck sales, but beyond that I don’t have any detail for you.”

You’ve got a yin and yang of positive factors after the election

“Well another good question, we do have the union yang [indiscernible] of, you know you got positive factors, the customer is still in good shape, the consumer confidence is strong interest rates, although a risk of increasing restored relatively very low levels the Car Park is still average age of the vehicle is well over 11.5 years, you know these are all positive gas prices still relatively really low that’s all positive for the industry, but it could be looking at gradual rate increases. We just talked about residual values. So we are always looking at all those factors and trying to balance them up and it turned specifically of the presidential election, but we haven’t changed our financial guidance or our industrial volume guidance as a result specifically to the election Dan.”

Credit is in good shape

“We’ve seen the articles, have seen one or two references and we’ve probably seen from a standpoint of Ford credit our delinquencies are in great shape, not running any different than they’ve run over the last several years and the quality of the customers that we are seeing and buying remains very consistent. So, we haven’t really seen much evidence of what you are referencing.”

Ford (F) CEO Mark Fields says the company’s emphasis on quantity of vehicles sold is changing

“If you look at major urban areas, car density is going to go down.  It’s physics.  There’s only so much space in cities.  The way we’re thinking about this as a company, our business model was always around how many units we sold, right, we’re now really thinking about it around vehicle miles travelled.  When something becomes available at a lower cost, guess what, people use it more.  You’ll have vehicles on the road 24/7 that rack up miles and need to be replaced more. So we’re going from an automobile company to an auto and mobility company.”

Memorial Day closed strong

“Colin, Memorial Day weekend was pretty strong. I mean we closed the month up pretty strong, had a good last weekend, call it four, five days, Friday through to the close yesterday across really cars, trucks and SUVs. You have the calenderizatin, which had affect between April and May. April was a five weekend month and May was a four weekend month. I don’t want to over talk that or over think that. But, May a year ago you have — was five weekend; you had Memorial Day on the fourth weekend, which as we know is a strong selling weekend and a week later you close the month, which you always have a big weekend when you close the month. I am not reading too much into the April, May; the April ran a little stronger. And May from a SAAR position versus a year ago little weaker, but some things happen when you are into a very strong industry. And we closed really well.”

Movement from passenger cars to SUVs is now a strong 5 year trend

“Segmentation of moving passenger cars into SUVs and into some extended pickup trucks is now very strong five-year trend with no indication of slowing down anytime soon. So, the passenger car side of market is getting hit by segmentation trends, which are really consumer preference trends. And to some extent that really plays into Ford’s wheelhouse, because we’re incredibly strong in SUV and truck and van part of the market.”

Consumer preference is driving SUVs

“consumer preference right now is what’s really driving the segment. If you think about in a very simplistic level with crossovers, SUVs, you get the higher eating [ph] position, you gave great visibility, you get great utility, generally speaking very good all weather performance, which is important to many customers, great safety features. And now, not that long ago customers had to make trade-offs in terms of fuel economy, ride and handling characteristics, technology, some safety features. And now, in our Ford SUV lineup, they don’t have to make any of those trade-offs. You get excellent fuel climb, we have all the technology. And so, we see this as a continuing trend. Our research indicates that baby boomers’ age prefer these vehicles. At the same time, the millennials starting to eventually get married and have families, they prefer these vehicles. So, we think that there is great buoyancy currently in the market, that’s obviously showing up in the numbers and that continues for a number of years.”

Passenger cars have fallen from 53% of the market to 40%

“The best way I can equate that Megan is roughly five years ago, six years ago, passenger cars were about 53% of the overall industry. Last year, I believe they were 42%; this year, it’s looking like close to 40%. Do we see that rate of decline slowing a little bit? Yes. But, we don’t see it stopping, I can tell you that. ”

Chinese consumers are almost “fervor” for SUVs

“I just came back from the Beijing Auto Show, and it was very interesting to see consumers are almost fervor for SUVs. You saw it not only in the exhibitors that were there, but just looking at the folks that were crowded around the vehicles. ”

Used car prices is a supply issue not a demand issue

“And then, Ryan, on your question on used car prices, obviously you’ve seen some of the Manheim reports. This is not a demand issue. The demand is there. It’s really a supply issue as more of these three-year leases come off. We’re going to watch it closely. Obviously, we’ve done a lot of the studies to see, are used car buyers actually cross-shopping with new cars. It’s very small, it’s in the single digits, but clearly it does have implications for trade-in values, so we’re going to continue to watch that closely.”

We’re looking at autonomous vehicles in terms of miles traveled

“in terms of what technology, whether it’s autonomous, or semi-autonomous, or all the connected cars will do for the industry, what is it going to mean? From our standpoint, we’re looking at this – first off, it’s too early to tell, but we’re really looking at this as vehicle miles traveled. And you could argue that in urban areas there may be less car density, either because of costs or just outright legislation, not allowed to use personal vehicles, which could dampen car sales. But also, at the same time, if you make something more available and you make it less expensive, it’s used more. And if you think about things like autonomous vehicles that will be used 24/7, they’ll rack up miles sooner, which will drive, as I mentioned earlier, more service revenue and, ultimately, more car sales.”

Used car prices falling as lease rates have been high

“you can see our experience in terms of auction values at first quarter mix across all periods there. And you can see that we have seen a decline in both 24 months and 36 months auction values versus a year ago. We are up sequentially from the fourth quarter. We would normally have expected that increase to be higher. It hasn’t occurred and that is largely based on supply. We have, across the industry, more units coming back from the increasing rates of lease over the last number of years. We’ll have about 200,000 units coming back this year. Demand, for us anyway, is still very healthy and about where it has been, we just have more units coming back.”

“In relation to the farm economy’s robust years earlier in the decade, the current downturn has been quite dramatic. Ford (F) CEO Mark Fields said cars on the road today are lasting longer than ever, suppressing demand for their products

“We have worked very hard at quality over the last number of years, and our quality is in the top echelons of the industry. So part of it is vehicles are lasting longer. When I was growing up, when you saw a 20-year-old car it was like, Oh my gosh — that thing’s on its last legs. Now you see a 20-year-old vehicle and in many cases it looks pretty good. So part of it is that, but the other part is when we went through the downturn, clearly there were a lot of deferrals of people replacing vehicles.”

“China started off very strongly. Little hard to tell in the first two months because of the impact of the Chinese New Year but it looks really, really good. Pricing there is starting to stabilize. We still expect it to be negative year-over-year but certainly we’re starting to see pricing stabilize, if we look at it on a sequential basis, which is a good sign.”

See auto sales in the US in the 17.5-18.5m range

“Yes. We see the U.S. economy, as I just mentioned, growing at sort of probably the low twos percent, maybe. We’ve got a range of 2.3, 2.8; we think we’re probably at the low end of that range. We think the industry is going to be in that range, I just mentioned 17.5 million to 18.5 million. So that seems to be holding up well. Pricing is looking good. Our pricing is up more than the industry but the industry actually is up in terms of transaction prices, although incentives within that are up modestly but pricing still looks to be healthy.”

Cars are under pressure vs trucks and SUVs but overall industry is quite healthy

“We see cars as being under pressure, and that’s more I think driven by the fact that consumers for quite some time have been shifting from cars into utilities; trucks holding up pretty well. And so, I think that’s really more of what’s happening there. It’s more of a consumer demand driven dynamic than anything else in terms of cars. But, the industry still looks quite healthy.”

No imminent recession and even the market seems to be recognizing that

“There’s nothing that would suggest that we’re eminently ready to go into a recession here in the U.S., which is what we’ve been saying for quite a number of months, which I think the market is starting to recognize as well. So, things seem to be getting back on track in terms of even a market perception. So, I think that everything is being set up of for the type of year that we had thought it would be, in terms of the U.S.”

The industry has been moving to more leasing at longer terms

“What we have seen is a continued shift, and this has been something that’s been happening for many, many years, not just recently to longer and longer terms. We’ve also seen more and more leasing in the industry.”

For Brazil to turn it’s going to take some structural changes to the economy

“It is entirely externally driven; it’s — an economic downturn is driven by the commodity cycle, but it’s also overlaid I think by all the political issues that we see in Brazil and read about every day. Frankly, the turnaround is going to require the cycle to turn. And I think resolution to some extent of the political crisis that we see because – for Brazil to unleash its potential is really going to require some structural changes to the economy, which is going to take government just have the ability and the will to do that. So, I think it’s dependent in part on that.”

Auction value of cars has been falling due to the demand shift into utilities

“Cars is a different issue. I think this is more of an industry issue. We’re seeing the auction value of cars decline and pretty sharply. And again, I think, this is going back to what I said earlier around the whole consumer demand shift from cars into utilities, and that’s playing out now in the auction price.”

Ford credit is going to have headwinds from auction values

“I think things appear to be a little healthier than what we thought, when we look at January and February. But I think if you — as I mentioned yesterday, if you — when you see our results for the first quarter, our expectation is that when you look at Ford Credit’s results, which I think will be quite good in the aggregate but within that on a year-over-year basis, you’ll see headwinds from auction values;”

The volatility does change the way management teams think about their businesses at the margin

“All that being said we are well aware of the volatility in the world today. From concerns of our global economic conditions to the swoon in oil prices, to gyrations in the stock market, the day-to-day swings can be violent. The reality is however that we can’t control any of these factors, what we can do is focus on running our business, consistent with the goals we have established and disciplines we’ve demonstrated. This means acquiring well-located communities that we believe can deliver high returns on investment. It also means hedging our bets by using more land options, where possible and focusing in on smaller, shorter duration projects, where we can get our capital back quickly.
