Hot Starts: 2012 vs 2013

The S&P 500 is now up over 9% year to date and the $DJIA is reaching into double digit territory for the year.  Between this year and last year, we’ve started to become accustomed to fast starts.  This far into 2012 the S&P 500 was up virtually the same amount.  Last year the $SPX went on to finish the first quarter up 12%, which was good enough for the 9th best first quarter ever.  Coincidentally, the 1st and 3rd best Q1’s in history came in back to back years: 1975 and 1976.  The market closed out each of those years strong, although in the following year, 1977, the market lost 11%, 8.4% of which came in Q1.
